Serendib News was founded in October 2000. Starting off with only 12 pages and two colors, 3,000 copies were first printed. These copies were only distributed in Victoria for its local Sri Lankan community. It was surprising how quickly, after only one year of distribution, Serendib News started reaching other states, including Tasmania and other countries like New Zealand! Due to the large advertising demand and a rapidly increasing readership, after only 18 months the paper converted into color publication, and increased to 40 pages. Simultaneously, a few pages in Sinhala were printed for readers to keep the Sri Lankan language active in Australia. This proved very popular.
Because of heavy demand from its readers, Serendib News Network launched the first Sinhala newspaper in Australia in 2004, and named it Ayubowan (which means “Welcome” in Sinhalese). Ayubowan has printed exceptional publications under the guidance of its Editor, Charitha Dissanayake.
