Nov 01, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has called on several state institutions and the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to appear in court on December 9th to respond on the measures taken to prevent floods in the Colombo City.

The Colombo High Court has issued this order following a petition filed by environmental organizations emphasizing the need for a flood preventing mechanism in the Colombo City following the flooding of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital and the parliamentary complex during the rains experienced on November 10 and 11 last year.

The court has called on CMC Special Commissioner Omar Kamil, Western Province Environment Minister Udaya Gammanpila, Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, the Urban Development Authority, the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation and the Attorney General to respond on the preventive measures adopted against the flooding of Colombo.

However, the court has criticized the authorities saying that they made immature remarks on an individual basis about the floods and the preventive measures taken instead of making a collective effort to address the issue.
